What comes to your mind when you think of good quality tires? Would you think of Formula 1 car tires that can disperse 85 liters of water/second at 300 KMPH? Or would you wonder why it costs $42,000 for a set of Bugatti tires? Perhaps, the innovation in tires is going beyond manufacturing and quality- CEAT Ltd, an India-based tire manufacturer, joined hands with Amazon Web Services to create intelligent tires. But there’s more to it. Read the full article to know how CEAT leveraged to push the frontiers of innovation in a highly competitive landscape.

CEAT was facing issues with its existing legacy IT infrastructure as it didn’t enable the tire manufacturer to develop and deploy digital services. As a result, it wasn’t possible to respond to market insights, and thus, CEAT faced tactical disadvantages on multiple fronts. It is noteworthy that it exports to over 100 countries, translating to manyfold complications.

With the increasing pressure on its operations and business prospects, CEAT Ltd decided to change the discourse for good. The first major transformation came in the form of SAP S/4HANA enterprise resource planning (ERP) software implementation. AWS was chosen as the cloud service provider, and they also implemented Amazon QuickSight. This AWS service made it easy for CEAT employees to understand their enterprise data and set up real-time analytics dashboards.

This enabled CEAT to unlock and unify the organizational insights to improve its manufacturing processes. CEAT connected its entire manufacturing machinery with the Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). It helps integrate and analyze both structured and unstructured business data to democratize insights across the organization, thereby enhancing visibility.

This gives CEAT’s management a better view of its factory’s operations and helps line managers keep a close eye on how factories work. For instance, AWS’s Amazon SageMaker service helps CEAT predict leaks in tire-curing presses. This service lets users quickly build, train, and deploy machine learning models in the cloud and on edge. This prediction cuts down on tire waste by cutting down on factory line stops and making tires better. CEAT’s manufacturing process requires over 250 raw materials, and thus, digitization was a much-needed technological enhancement for the organization.

The resultant data analytics extended insights that helped them make modern, high-quality tires that make trips safer. This included an intelligent tire for commercial fleet operators. These intelligent tires have inbuilt telemetry sensors connected to the cloud. These sensors record information about the tires, such as their pressure and temperature, to find leaks and predict when they will fail. Thus, it will enable fleet operators to keep their vehicles on the road as much as possible without compromising safety and preventing car accidents.

Among other technology adoptions, Amazon Redshift, a cloud data warehouse service, helped it quickly create new digital solutions for customers. CEAT went on to run a pilot project that automatically suggests to tire dealers which ones to order based on past orders and real-time supply.

Thus, the SAP S/4HANA and AWS ecosystem products helped CEAT create smarter manufacturing capabilities and products. In fact, it was able to achieve a new infrastructure deployment time of 12 hours from the previous two months.

The solution worked for CEAT Ltd, but what about your organization? Finding the right solutions from a single ecosystem isn’t the best or the smartest choice every time. At The X Future, we understand this very well and thus, as a part of our last-mile innovation delivery services, we offer extensive consulting services, solution scouting, and implementation service.
